RESPONDING TO AGONAL GASPS SAVES LIVES

In 2005 the U.K. Resuscitation Council changed the protocol guidelines For performing C.P.R. (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation).

One of the changes involves Agonal Gasps. During the first few minutes of a cardiac arrest, a casualty may be barely breathing, or taking infrequent noisy gasps (Agonal Gasps).

Prior to the new changes a casualty making these gasps was often put in the recovery position, while waiting for an ambulance. Now the Resuscitation Council have advised doing C.P.R. on these occasions Because the amount of breaths from these gasps will not be sufficient To pump oxygen around the body.

The other week, Lyle and Dawn (First Aid Trainers for Easy as A.B.C) were at a meeting where a friend collapsed, with very little warning. He just said “I don’t feel too good, and collapsed unconscious”. We straight away noticed that his breathing was agonal, and took turns in doing C.P.R. until an ambulance arrived.

The ambulance crew set up the defib, and shocked him once as his heart was in V. F. (Ventricular Fibrillation). This got the heart into a normal rhythm (Sinus). Our friend had to be shocked also on the way to hospital, but is now making a good recovery. This shows the effectiveness of performing C.P.R. for a casualty with Agonal Breaths (Gasps)
