Foster Carers Course
This recent course was made enjoyable by a very friendly group, who showed a real team spirit, and were very keen to become competent first aiders, to give the best possible care to the children being placed in their care
The delegates became competent in demonstrating skills such as C.P.R. for all ages, controlling bleeding, dealing with bone and joint injuries, choking and other accident & medical emergencies that could arise in the home when caring for children. They learned the importance of rendering first aid and the importance of summoning appropriate secondary aid when needed.
Scenarios included : Child coming into the home to tell her mother that "Dad was supposed to be fixing the fairy lights but has gone to sleep in the garden."
Choking baby in supermarket with a difficult bystander
Mum (first aider) comes home from shopping and finds dad (not a first aider) and young son with a head injury after falling off his bike. Mum is concerned, dad is not concerned. They start to argue...............
A young couple with their first foster baby finds baby fitting with high temperature.
All dealt very competently with these very challenging first aid situations.
Re-assuring a hurt or an ill child can be a particular challenge for a first aider and it was particularly impressive to see these skills being shown by all the class - Well done!!!
